SEFO OLOMOUC
The conception of the completion of the gap site in the historical centre of Olomouc attempts to draw inspiration from both adjacent worlds meeting in this place: a small scale of mediaeval subdivision of land on the one hand and the large scale of palaces, ecclesiastical and military buildings of the Předhradí beginning here on the other. The separation of the new museum into five buildings, thoroughly respecting the original allotment is no formal act which would only simulate a scene of five buildings; thanks to the necessary separation of the individual functions of the exhibition halls, library, entry hall or bookshop and refreshments, the form of the division somehow offered itself automatically. Through the removal of the upper part of the hipped roofs, natural daylight reaches the interior of each building. This, especially in the space of the library, reveals the inspiration of halls of a similar character, be it from the unimplemented visions of the French Revolutionary Classicists like Boullèe and Ledoux or from the implemented library spaces from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Even in the cases when an upper floor is inserted in an individual building, daylight is ensured on the lower floor through placement of a smaller structure. We thus approach the topic of a ‘house in a house’, which ensures favourable conditions for the the display of exhibits on the walls while providing light from above on both floors. The entire project works with the type of house as an archetype, which builds on the tradition but also endeavours to be modern. The construction of the new buildings has been designed of fair face concrete, which is coloured white throughout by crushed marble.
